Kansas newspaper editor White was known as the "Sage of Emporia." He bought the Emporia Gazette in 1895. Laid in the book is an undated (circa 1910?) newspaper clipping noting the death of William Martindale of Emporia who "was once one of Kansas' wealthy men but gave all he had following (his) bank's failure."
