Aldrich was raised in Boston and wrote for several Boston newspapers. In 1898 she moved to France working as a foreign correspondent and translator. While there, she became a friend of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. She was eye witness to much of World War I from her home outside Paris. Her home in Huiry overlooked the Marne river valley.
